About the Department

The department of zoology was started in the year 1968 as an allied department offering zoology at allied level for B.Sc., botany and chemistry students. In the year 2013 then department was upgraded in to a major department and started offering zoology at undergraduate (B.Sc.,) level. Now the department is offering B.Sc., zoology in both Tamil and English medium. In each medium 24 students are admitted every year and the total students strength of the department is around 144. The department is having seven regular teaching and one lab assistant posts (non-teaching) sanctioned. Under teaching category one assistant professor and one associate professor is working at present. Out of the two teaching faculty one person is deputed from Annamalai University for three years duration. The remaining teaching post are filled with temporary teaching staff as guest lecturers. There are five guest lecturers working in the department. All the teaching faculties including guest lecturers are Ph.D., holders having wide exposure both in teaching and research.

Objective

The first priority is to promote quality education followed by personality and character development. Apart from offering subject related objectives we develop professional competence and social commitment among the students.

Features available in the Department

The Department of Mathematics offers courses in B. Sc., M. Sc. Mathematics and M. Phil., and Ph.D., Programs under the affiliation of Thiruvalluvar University. The Department has well trained and dedicated team of staff members. Under the assistance of efficient teachers, the students here can perform a wide array of experiments and strengthen their scientific, investigative, reasoning and social skills. State level conferences, quiz are conducted for their educational benefits. Research outcomes of faculty members are published in national and international journals periodically

  • • Unit wise syllabus is explained to students.
  • • Practical classes are conducted by giving individual attention to every student.
  • • Outcomes are analysed through class test and model tests.
  • • Feedback obtained from the students and alumni analysed to know if the stated objective of the curriculum is are achieved.
  • Skill oriented programmes are offered to students through adopting skill based elective papers like Vermiculture, pisciculture and industrial fishery management. Through this skill orientation students can have better opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills.

    Features available in the department

    The department of zoology is having two laboratories. Both the laboratories are well equipped with work tables and other furniture to carry out science practical works. Laboratory equipment like microscopes, refrigerators are available in the department. Chemicals and glass wares required for practical classes are procured every year through state fund (Non-plan scheme). Spacious class rooms with adequate furniture are available. The department library is having over 2000 subject books. Staff and students make use of the books. Further general books are available at general library for student and staff use. Faculty members attend workshops, seminars, symposia and conferences to update their knowledge. Learning resources like audio-visual aids, the internet, for effective teaching. Every academic year subject books are purchased and made available for teachers and students for the enhancement of knowledge. Internet facility at the library and at the departments is made available for teachers and students. Students are permitted to attend Seminars, symposium, and workshops to keep in touch with the recent trends and developments in their respective subjects of interest. The advanced techniques adopted by the faculties for the enrichment of teaching are audiovisual method for imparting language skills, use of LCD, OHP, Bio Visual Charts, 3D-models for illustration and explanation of concepts. Faculty members are permitted to attend refresher courses, workshops and conferences to upgrade themselves in innovative teaching methodologies. Research outcomes of faculty members are published in national and international journals periodically. Soft skill development training programmes, ICT programmes are organised in the college for the benefit of student.
