Department of Chemistry was established in the academic year of 1980 - 1981. The P.G courses started in the year of 2012 - 2013. Shift system was started for the course of B.Sc., (English Medium and English Medium) from the academic year 2007-2008. The Department was elevated as Research Departments in the academic year 2018 - 2019. There are 312 students studying in B. Sc., Chemistry (Including Shift - I & II) and 58 Students studying M. Sc., Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry offers courses in B. Sc. and M. Sc. Chemistry along with Chemistry as a subsidiary programme for the students who have taken Physics, Botany or Zoology as their main subject. The chemistry laboratories give students the opportunity to perform experiments that explore important chemical concepts and introduce proper lab techniques and safety. The students will demonstrate the ability to solve chemical problems using logical procedures based on well-established scientific principles.
Vision
The vision of the Department of Chemistry is to establish a model centre of excellence in the field of education in frontier areas of chemistry. The primary focus will be to produce highly competent graduates and post-graduates capable of working in the rapidly changing scenario in the field of chemical science throughout their life.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to impart quality education through knowledge and updated information in the field of basic and applied chemistry related to science and technology. This will not only provide a comprehensive understanding of chemistry to the budding scientist but also enable them to face the future challenge of the world.
Objective
The objective of the department is to train students of B. Sc., and M. Sc., in chemistry to enable them to be ready to take up leadership positions in industry and academia for the development of our country.
Subjects like Organic chemistry, Polymer chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Medicinal chemistry will prepare students to remain in touch with the forefront of the new discoveries happening in chemistry. The Department aims to provide a research problems to our Ph. D students in various thrust areas such as Drug discovery and development (Natural Products), polymer chemistry, organic synthesis, materials science, computation chemistry etc.
Features available in the Department
The Department of Chemistry offers courses in B. Sc., M. Sc. Chemistry and M. Phil., and Ph. D., Programs under the affiliation of Thiruvalluvar University. The Department possesses well-designed, spacious and well-equipped U. G, P. G. and Allied chemistry Laboratories. They have all sets of accurate digital measuring instruments, kits, experimental gadgets, models, charts and other necessary apparatus. The Department has well trained and dedicated team of staff members. Under the assistance of efficient teachers, the students here can perform a wide array of experiments and strengthen their scientific, investigative, reasoning and social skills. The Chemistry Lab is well equipped with all modern apparatus and chemicals required upto P.G level, with the seating capacity of about 30 students in this well ventilated Labs. There are separate laboratories for U. G and P. G courses including, Two U. G laboratories, One P. G laboratory, One Allied Chemistry laboratory and one Research laboratory. Research is carried out in various thrust areas such as Drug discovery and development (Natural Products), polymer chemistry, organic synthesis, materials science, computation chemistry. The Department offers a vibrant atmosphere to students and faculty to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry.
