PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT
Government Thirumagal Mills College (also known as GTM College) is an educational institution located at Katpadi Road, Gudiyattam. The college was started in the year 1964 with the aim of providing quality education for the students from the rural area.
The Department of History was started in the year 2013 at UG level and in the year 2018 at PG level. The medium of Instructions are Tamil and English.
The Department of History offers a broad range of course options covering American, European, Asian, China and Japan History. While the Department as a national and international reputation in its scholarship. The faculties are equally committed to teaching and advising the students. The students are study of the past not only prepares students for understanding the present. But also arms them with important research and professional skills.
At present there are 96 males students and 44 female students are studying the Department. Our Department is gifted with more efficient and devoted 1 Permanent Staff and 8 Guest Lecturers who are ready to adhere to the needs of the students at any time. Under the able guidance and counselling of staff members, students bring laurels to the department and college by securing many prizes in various competitions that are held at regional and state level by their active participation in various competitions and sports meet they add fame to the college. Our Department Library has many books like history and competitive exam books.
Our Department conducted an Online National Quiz programme on History of India on 30.06.2020 and Online National Quiz programme on History of Modern India on 30.07.2020.
Our Department organised to visit the field survey of Archaeological materials founded at Modikuppam near Gudiyattam on 05 March 2021.
VISION
The History Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian History in the context of world history. We believe that only a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future.
MISSION
Transform the students into citizens who are critically informed about the past and its consequences for the present promote studies in history, society and culture of Tamil Nadu and India in general and Tamil history in particular. Empower students to cope with the challenges of globalisation by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning about the past. The knowledge about the interconnections between the global, national, regional and local history will equip the students to face the challenges with confidence.
