About Physics Department

The department of Physics was incepted in the year 1969 with launched the Bachelor of Science (Physics) program, sanctioned substantial strength under affiliation with the University of Madras and Affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University since 2005. During the academic year 2012-13, M.Sc., a course started in the department to provide higher education for rural students. There are successfully completed outcome students who are well attained at both research and administrative level from this department. During the year 2018, the department expanded as PG and Research Department of Physics and the department is actively involved in various fields such as Spectroscopy, Crystallography, Quantum chemical calculation, Ultrasonic and Nanotechnology. At present (2021-2022), the department has 3 Regular faculty members and 8 Guest lecturers and 2 Non-Teaching Staffs. Total no of students in the academic year: UG: I-B.SC (PHYSICS) -46 II-B.SC (PHYSICS) -39 III-B.SC (PHYSICS) -42 PG: I-M.SC (PHYSICS) -18 II-M.SC (PHYSICS) -12 Total: 157.

DEPARTMENT LABORATORY AND LIBRARY

    • The department is comprised of a laboratory to do general experiments as well as electronic experiments for both major and allied students. In addition, optics laboratories exist for both major and allied students.

    • The PG course is running in both the main building and the new building (Dr MGR Centenary Building) with the facility of a laboratory.

    • The department having good collection of academic books for both UG and PG students in the library.

    • The department has a computer facility with an internet connection for the use of teachers and students

    OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT

    The Aim of the Department is to encourage discipline, sincerity, hard work, quality, research and social responsibility of the students. The goal of the Physics major is to provide the student with a broad understanding of the Physical principles of the universe, to help them to develop critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills, to empower them to think creatively and critically about scientific problems and experiments, and to provide training for students planning careers in Physics and in the Physical sciences broadly defined.

    ACTIVITIES

    • During the academic year, faculty attend the Faculty Development program, a conference, seminar, and workshop.

    • Every year on National Science Day and Department Association function, the Physics Department celebrates.

    • Students for attending sports, NCC and NSS camps, the opportunity is given to do practicals in the afternoon time.

    • Every academic year, M.Sc., Second Year students are involved in project work and their report is submitted to the university.

    • In the 2021-2022 academic year, postgraduate First and Second-year students visited the laboratory equipment in the Vellore VIT in March 2022.

    FUTURE PLAN

     Separate labs for general and electronics experiments and research programmes.

     The department should have at least one smart classroom.

     Certificate courses and coaching classes.

     At least one national or international conference every year.

     Promotion of web-based learning.

     Each staff member must publish at least two articles in reputable international journals each year.

     Establish a strong alumni database.
