About English Department

The Department of English was established in the year 2012. Initially, it played an important role in improving the language skills of learners who come from socio-economically weaker sections of the society. The academic year 2012 was quite a remarkable year as the department started offering B.A. English literature course. Gradually, the department attained the status of a PG department in 2013with just one student getting enrolled for MA in 2013, the number has steadily increased and currently there are 25 students in PG and 68 in UG degree courses. With five regular faculty members and ten guest lecturers, the Department of English has elevated itself to the status of a Research department offering both M.Phil. and PhD degree courses.

The Department organizes conferences, seminars and workshops. Experts in the field of literature and language are invited to deliver lectures on topics of current interest. Interactions with experts provide valuable opportunities for both faculty members and students to update their academic knowledge. One of the milestones of the department is the conduct of an International Virtual Conference in the year 2020 in collaboration with Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, Loyola College, Chennai and Sacred Heart’s College, Thirupattur. More than 1000 participants from different parts of the country and abroad participated in the conference and presented papers.

The literary association (PHOENIX) was started in the year 2012. Various competitions are conducted to encourage and motivate students. Both UG and PG students are encouraged to attend Intra/Inter level cultural competitions, seminars and conferences organized by various institutions. They are encouraged to participate in sports activities too. Awareness was created among students of the need to preserve the environment and as a result many of them volunteered to plant tree saplings in the college.

The PG students, under the guidance of their project guides, get their research papers published in journals. This provides the required motivation for some students to pursue M.Phil and Ph.D research degree courses.
